Green Scene: Hotel Chains Report Big Reductions in Waste

More of the major hotel companies are getting in the habit of releasing annual reports on their attempts to cut energy use, water use and waste at their properties—although it takes a little while. Several of these sustainability reports on progress made in 2011 have only come out within the last few months. Still, these reports give a good glimpse into just how much effort these companies are putting into their green initiatives and their belief that sharing the news is good business.

U.S. Travel Industry to Add Nearly 100,000 Jobs By 2013

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Travel Association today projected increases in leisure, business and international inbound travel next year will enable the industry to add 98,800 American jobs by the end of 2013. Leisure travel is expected to rise 1.2 percent, business travel is projected to increase nearly one percent and international inbound travel will increase four percent. These job gains will increase direct travel industry employment to more than 7.6 million jobs next year.

Hurricane Roundup: Assessing Sandy's Impact on Meetings

Hurricane Sandy brought much of the eastern seaboard to a standstill when it made landfall on Monday, causing the cancellation of some10,000 flights and many meetings and conventions from Boston to Washington, D.C./Virginia and points south. The massive storm, which stretched across 800 miles and 11 states, was expected to have animpact on 50 to 60 million people, according to reports.

Hurricane Sandy Rains on East Coast, Meetings and Events

The monster storm known as Hurricane Sandy — potentially the largest storm to ever hit the United States, according to media reports — already is causing power outages, flooding and evacuations up and down the East Coast. Roads, schools and businesses aren't the only things being shut down, however. Meetings and events all along the Eastern Seaboard also have been affected.
