IMEX America: Perfect Storm of Event Success
Last fall's inaugural IMEX America had everything: more than 140 global exhibitors, a wide range of education, a setting in one of the world's most convention-friendly cities, partnerships with every event industry organization under the sun (or so it seemed!), and—maybe most important—a meeting and incentive community that was fed up with three years of recession and eager to get back to business.
Held in Las Vegas last October, IMEX America drew 3,700 attendees (including some 2,000 hosted buyers) and nearly 2,000 exhibitors. By all accounts, it was a fantastic launch of a new show.

U.S. Travel Hits the Campaign Trail
As members of both the Democratic and Republican parties converge on the cities of Charlotte, SC, and Tampa, FL for their respective national conventions, the U.S. Travel Association is taking every opportunity to remind them that travel not only matters, but is a crucial component of the American economy — and the very conventions that are bringing them together. According to the U.S. Travel Association, the travel industry contributes $1.9 trillion total to the U.S. economy alone.

Fees and surcharges collected by U.S. hotels during 2012 will reach a record $1.95 billion
Fees and surcharges collected by U.S. hotels during 2012 will reach a record $1.95 billion, according to New York University's Tisch Center for Hospitality divisional dean Bjorn Hanson. The 3.5 percent increase from 2011 reflects a mixture of higher fees, new fees and higher occupancies, Hanson said.

Green Scene: A Second Life for Swag
Anyone who has ever been around a convention center after an event wraps up has seen the boxes of promotional materials, chairs and other items that get left behind. The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority collected 83 tons of materials in 2011, but rather than going to the landfill, it all ended up in the hands of nonprofits that were able to put it to good use. Backpacks and toothbrushes go to charities that serve local children
